NEWPORT BUSINESS BURGLARIZED
A Newport business was burglarized early Tuesday. State Police at Newport say Smith’s Tire and Service Center on Newport Road was the site of the break-in at about 12:45 a.m. Police say someone tried to force their way into the business through a rear door but were unsuccessful. The burglar or burglars then entered the building by breaking the glass in the front door, but fled after an alarm sounded. Police say they have evidence left at the scene and are continuing their investigation.

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS MAY LOSE SPEEDING TICKET MONEY
Municipalities who use state police for protection may lose their cut of the traffic ticket fines under the Governor's budget proposal. The Governor's plan to have state police keep the proceeds of the tickets they write while covering municipalities would add about 8 million dollars a year to the state police budget for needed equipment. Holly Fishel, director of research and policy development for the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, says municipalities would miss their share of traffic ticket fines from state police, but it's less of a bite than some other proposals. The Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors says other proposals to charge municipalities who don't have their own police protection a per capita fee would cost many times that amount.
